Nomination Day set for Sept 1, Polling Day on Sept 11 for Singapore's general election

SINGAPOREANS will go to the polls on September 11, with Nomination Day taking place ten days earlier on September 1.
The dates were confirmed at about 4pm on Tuesday with the Writ of Election issued by President Tony Tan Keng Yam. This was released an hour after he dissolved Singapore's 12th Parliament on the advice of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
A total of 2.46 million citizens are eligible to vote at the General Election, higher than the 2.35 million that cast their ballots at the last polls in May 2011.
Nine schools will be used as nomination centres for candidates to file their papers on Sep 1.
In a post on Twitter, PM Lee said: "Polling Day is on 11 Sep. This GE is about our future. Please support my team. Together, we'll keep Singapore special.
