SINGAPORE'S former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, who died early on Monday morning, was a visionary statesman, said Christine Lagarde, managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
"It is with great sadness that I have learned of the passing of Lee Kuan Yew, founding father of Singapore. He was a visionary statesman whose uncompromising stand for meritocracy, efficiency and education transformed Singapore into one of the most prosperous nations in the world.''
Ms Lagarde added that Mr Lee's wisdom and leadership would be remembered by people all around the globe.
"On behalf of the International Monetary Fund, I extend our condolences to his family and the people of Singapore."
